The Virasoro Lie algebra plays an important role in physics (conformal field theory) and in mathematics (representation theory of infinite dimensional algebras). In this talk I wish to explain how the machinery of vertex algebras provides an important tool for understanding the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra.
